Latest Updated On 19/05/2025: In the academic session 2025-26, 95 thousand 220 students of the state will get the benefit of Student Credit Card Scheme. In this, the highest target of providing education loan to 7840 students has been set in Patna. The lowest target is to provide education loan to 415 students in Shivhar. Last year, about 12 percent less students could be given education loan than the target.
The Education Department sets the target on the basis of passing of students in class 12th. This year the number of students passing Intermediate (12th class) is 11 lakh 7 thousand 330. In the district where the number of intermediate passers is high, the target of student credit card has also been kept high. Last year, a target was set to give education loan to 85 thousand 85 thousand. For this, 90 thousand 335 applications were received, but finally 75 thousand students got loans for studies. There is a provision to provide education loan for college fees to the students of Bihar enrolled in recognized government and private institutions. Along with this, there is a provision to provide a maximum loan of Rs 4 lakh including laptop and hostel expenses.
The state government provides education loan to students for studying general graduation, post graduation, engineering and employment oriented courses. A student gets a maximum loan of Rs 4 lakh.
There is a provision to provide loan to students at 4 percent interest and to girl students, transgender and disabled students at 1 percent interest.
The scheme of providing education loan to the students of the state for higher education was started on 2 October 2016. Initially, the state government used to provide education loan to students through banks by becoming the guarantor, but after the reluctance and trouble in getting education loan from banks, the state government decided to provide education loan by forming Education Finance Corporation.
After 13 May 2025, education loan is being given to students from Education Finance Corporation. 23 thousand 748 had applied through the bank, in which 442 crore loans were approved for 14 thousand 804 students, but finally 14 thousand 804 students could get an amount of 157 crore 70 lakh as education loan.
So far 4 lakh 43 thousand 281 students have sought education loan through Bihar State Education Finance Corporation. Out of this, loans of Rs 11 thousand 144 crore 38 lakh were approved for 3 lakh 73 thousand 93 students. In this, an amount of Rs 7 thousand 129 crore 58 lakh has been distributed to 3 lakh 54 thousand 814 students.
